Fishman has remained true in many ways to Abstract Expressionism, to allover compositions and the sense of spontaneous eventfulness. Yet in this latest work, she also seems to reach further back. Little Passion, for instance, a small mustard-colored painting highlighted in blue, recalls Rouault in its compressed space, here crowded with forms resembling horses' heads. Conjuring up animals is not so big a leap as it might seem for this abstractionist. Fishman's lines are so vital that they seem capable of metamorphosing at any moment into living, breathing things.
